Two main styles exist, the Standard-Ranch and the Split-Ranch.
The Standard-Ranch tends to design the bedrooms to one side of the home and common/shared living spaces (main and rear foyers, kitchen, dining, living & laundry) to the other side of the home. Whereas the Split-Ranch tends to design the master suite on the opposite side of the home from other bedrooms and captures the common/shared living spaces in the center of the home.
Either style may be constructed as a Raised-Ranch. The Raised-Ranch refers to elevating/raising the home out of the ground (above finished grade) about two to four feet. This raising creates a “taller” appearing home which incorporates steps to a front porch or entry foyer. Additionally, the Raised-Ranch affords the introduction of full size windows in the lower-level (basement) which is extremely desirable if a finished basement is planned. The introduction of more natural light along with other design considerations creates a space that feels bright and airy rather than stuffy and restrictive.
